The editors-in-chief of the Monumenta Serica Institute and the Anthropos Institute recently published an anthology of selected articles from their respective academic journals in the fields of Sinology and ethnology. The volume is meant as a contribution to the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in 2025, which according to the wish of its founder Arnold Janssen always laid a focus on scientific work, alongside its missionary and social engagement.
The book features articles from the journals Anthropos (established in 1906 in Mödling nearby Vienna) and Monumenta Serica (established in 1935 in Peking) by the following authors: Henri Bernard SJ, Irene Eber, Martin Gusinde SVD, Matthias Hermanns SVD, Jia Jinhua, Anna Meiser, Jean Michaud, Paul Schebesta SVD, Wilhelm Schmidt SVD, Henry Serruys CICM, Harrie Vanderstappen, and Henryk Zimoń SVD. The articles illustrate particular periods in the development of both journals and testify to the SVD’s commitment to academic inquiry in the fields of anthropology, linguistics, and Sinology.
