The two volumes present the proceedings of the international conference held in Sankt Augustin in 1992, commemorating of the four hundredth birthday of the German-born Jesuit China missionary Johann Adam Schall von Bell. The collection comprises 51 scholarly articles, all printed in their original languages, i.e. English, Chinese, German, and French.
The book is supplemented with summaries in English and Chinese, as well as with numerous illustrations, a bibliography, and a general index with a Chinese glossary.
