Gregor Weimar started to study Philosophy and Theology at the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Sankt Georgen of the Jesuits in Frankfurt in 2003 before continuing his studies at the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule S.V.D. in Sankt Augustin, where he received his German Diplom in Catholic Theology in 2012 with a thesis on the Tenchi Hajimari no Koto as a case study of syncretistic processes in Japanese mission history. During his studies he spent the years 2009–2011 at the Language Center of Nanzan University in Nagoya (Japan) studying Japanese. In the years 2013–2015 he studied Chinese, first at the Fu Jen University Language Center in Taipei (Taiwan) and then at Wuhan University (PRC). He subsequently pursued Advanced Chinese Studies at SOAS, University of London, receiving his M.A. in 2017 with a dissertation on the Sinicization of the Catholic Church in China as reflected in church architecture. From 2017 to 2019 he worked at the Monumenta Serica Institute and the China-Zentrum in Sankt Augustin, following an earlier internship at the Monumenta Serica Sinological Research Center at Fu Jen Catholic University in 2016. In 2019 he began his doctoral studies at SOAS under the supervision of Dr. Lars Peter Laamann with a thesis on the Manchu-language biblical translations by Louis Antoine de Poirot, S.J. (1735–1813), and the Jesuit mission to the Manchus in the context of Qing imperial culture; the thesis was defended in May 2025 and the degree awarded in 2026. From 2021 to 2024 he taught the Manchu language at SOAS in collaboration with Lars Laamann, and from November 2022 until June 2024 he coordinated the acquisition of book reviewers for the Central Asiatic Journal. Since 1 January 2025 he has been working in the editorial offices of the journal Monumenta Serica in Sankt Augustin, where in 2025 he also served as temporary substitute for the editor-in-chief during several longer absences, coordinating the assessment and peer review of submitted manuscripts and facilitating the meetings of the editorial offices.
His research interests include the Manchu language and Manchu philology, the history of the Jesuit and S.V.D. missions in China, biblical translation in the Qing period, Qing imperial and legal culture, and Christianity in China. His current research focuses on Louis de Poirot’s Manchu Bible translations.
